Renovations: A Quick Makeover Before the Holidays

Ceiling renovations in the entrance of a condo at 1010 Burnaby St, Vancouver

Not to alarm you, but…Christmas is right around the corner!! How does the song go…Deck the halls (and smooth ceilings) with boughs of holly?

While renovations may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of holiday preparations, it’s a good idea to plan ahead a little. Fall is the perfect time of year for renovations, including ceiling texture removal.

The Frazzled Festive Holiday Season is Upon Us

What is it about the holiday season that makes otherwise sane people act crazy? Everyone (myself included, unfortunately) seems to be in a tizzy trying to get everything “just right”.  But you know what? Unless Martha Stewart’s visiting, no one is going to remember the lavender infused whipped cream afloat your gourmet hot chocolate. As long as no one dies from food poisoning, no fingers or toes are lost and your cousin doesn’t show up in his RV prepared to stay for weeks, I’d say it’s a successful Christmas, or Hanukkah, or Thanksgiving or Festivus.

North Pole-Worthy Ceiling Renovations

While your home may not be featured in the Christmas edition of House & Home, there’s no reason why it has to look shabby or outdated, either.  A quick and painless way to spruce up your home before the holidays is by doing ceiling renovations, specifically popcorn ceiling removal. This can really change the look of  your home. Smooth ceilings reflect light much better and make a space feel larger and brighter.  There’s a health benefit to removing ceiling texture also. Allergies and asthma can be aggravated by the dust and allergens trapped up there. So not only will ceiling resurfacing make your home look more modern, but there will be less sneezing and itchy, watery eyes as well. We’re sure your guests (including Santa!) will appreciate this.

Skylights With Ceiling Texture – A Bad Romance

Skylights With Ceiling Texture – It Was Never Meant to Be

Skylights are a great way to brighten a room.  The natural light is flattering and your energy bill can often be reduced since less artificial light is needed.  However, if they are not finished correctly, like skylights with ceiling texture, problems can arise. Texture is applied to skylights for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes it’s done to cut corners. It’s easier to spray popcorn ceiling than it is to finish the drywall properly. Other times it’s done because the homeowner likes the look.

Regardless of the reason, it’s a terrible idea. As mentioned in a previous post (Moldy skylights, cracked and peeling off?), skylights are naturally more hot and humid than the rest of the house.  That lurking moisture and ceiling texture is not a good combination.  It can cause cracking, peeling, and even mold build-up and then you’re left with a real mess.  It’s far better to finish it properly from the start.  If you do have skylights with ceiling texture, RemoveCeilingTexture.com is the solution to your problem.

Good Riddance to Bad Ceiling Texture

We were called in to have a look at a home in Port Coquitlam that had skylights with ceiling texture.  The homeowner is an architect who had designed and built his home in the early 1980s.  At the time, it was common to cover everything with ceiling texture.

Now, though, the ceiling texture was dirty and stained.  The owners were also concerned about their home’s air quality and possible health risks (including asthma), especially to their visiting grandchildren.  So after living with it for many years, they decided it was time to kiss the ceiling texture goodbye.  We got to work removing the texture in the skylights, and throughout the rest of the house as well.

A Smooth New Start

Once we removed the texture from the skylights and finished them to a smooth surface, they actually looked brighter.  The texture had been swallowing up the natural light, but now the light is reflected much more efficiently.  Best of all, the owners don’t have to worry about health hazards like mold.  They know that their grandchildren can play in their home without being exposed to toxic air.  It’s a brand new beginning for the home they designed and built with love.

Water Damaged Ceilings Near Granville Island

Peeling, water damaged ceilings at the entrance

One of the issues with strata living is sometimes having to deal with other people’s messes.  When condo owners Thomas and Maria experienced water damaged ceilings due to a neighbour’s flood, they had a restoration company come in to repair the ceilings.

What should have been a simple job turned into a nightmare for them.

The restoration company took much longer than they had expected, causing harm to their home-based business and causing them unnecessary stress.  Soon after the “restoration” was finished, the ceiling texture began to crack and peel off and they were left with a botched job.

They mentioned to their postman the headache they were dealing with, and he happened to know that another homeowner on his route had just had his ceilings refinished and was very pleased with them.  He promised to get the name of the ceiling company for them.  That is how they got in touch with us at RemoveCeilingTexture.com!

We came in to have  a look.  Their ceilings really were a mess and they were understandably hesitant about more work being done.  They had been promised quality work before, and the restoration company couldn’t deliver.  We assured them that since we specialize in ceiling work, we have expertise that other restoration and renovation companies just don’t have.  We had dealt with numerous water-damaged ceilings before  and we knew we could fix their problem (read about our repair of water damaged ceilings caused by a leaky roof in Burnaby).  Thomas and Maria were still somewhat nervous, but decided to have us start right away.

They were finally able to relax when they saw that we did indeed have the expertise we promised.  We transformed their peeling, cracked, water damaged ceilings into smooth, pristine ceilings that now look even better than before the flood.

The before and after photos show the extent of damage to their ceilings.  The before photos are after the original “restoration” company worked on them and the after photos are after we fixed them.

Smooth ceilings in Burnaby

smooth ceilings in metrotown, Burnaby (hirise dining room popcorn ceiling texture removal)

This cozy, 1980’s hi-rise apartment at Metrotown, was in need of some well-deserved renovation, and that’s exactly what the owners decided to do. Once the furniture was removed and carpet was pulled up, we moved in to remove that ugly ceiling texture, which had been collecting dust for over 20 years. Not to mention that after 20 years, the owners were sick and tired of looking at it. The owners of this cozy condo were simply looking for one thing;  smooth ceilings throughout the apartment.

smooth ceilings in metrotown, Burnaby (hirise dining room popcorn ceiling texture removal)We removed the popcorn ceiling, skim coated the underlying (rough) concrete ceiling, sanded the ceiling to a smooth finish and painted the ceiling with a ceiling-specific, flat, white primer and paint. As you can see, the results speak for themselves. There is a specific problem that concrete ceilings pose when removing the textured ceilings. This problem is no apparent prior to painting the concrete ceilings and if you have an inexperienced person trying to make smooth ceilings out of textured concrete ceilings, you usually run into a finished ceiling that is uneven and imperfect.

With over 20 years of experience in the specific science of removing textured ceilings and making beautiful smooth ceilings throughout Metro Vancouver, RemoveCeilingTexture.com is your first choice for smooth ceilings.

The owner wanted us to get rid of the popcorn texture throughout this highrise unit in Burnaby. This texture was quite course (SnowTex) and it was a slightly longer process to get rid of. The total time from delivery of materials to the final sweep and getting our tools packed away was 2 days. As you can see, the results speak for themselves.
